Outstanding marks for Schloss Dagstuhl

Dr.-Ing. Michael Gerke Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik GmbH

The Leibniz Association regularly reviews the high scientific quality of all its institutes. After 7 years, it was time again for Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik (LZI) and the LZI was evaluated by an international commission of experts.

The evaluation brought much praise for Schloss Dagstuhl. The high international reputation of the Dagstuhl Seminars was particularly appreciated. After interruptions and restrictions due to the pandemic, these meetings of hand-picked researchers from all over the world at Schloss Dagstuhl for joint work and mutual exchange on selected informatics topics were said to have resumed well. The computer science publication database dblp, which is also operated by the LZI, was praised for its strong growth: with about 2 million daily page views, the database averages well in excess of 28,000 users per day now. Dagstuhl Publishing was also praised for the growth of its open access series for the publication of computer science articles, which are accessible free of charge via the Internet.

The evaluation ended with excellent marks for the LZI. The Evaluation Senate of the Leibniz Association then recommended continuing the financial support for Schloss Dagstuhl. Normally, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) of the federal and state governments, which is ultimately responsible, follows such recommendations. Schloss Dagstuhl currently receives around 3.2 million euros a year in funding from the federal and state budgets, including Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate in particular. The Senate recommended that consideration be given to increasing this funding in order to expand Schloss Dagstuhl's Open Science activities to improve free access to science.

Further information on the evaluation and a link to the Senate's full comments can be found at: https://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de/en/about-us/evaluation/the-evaluation-proced...

    Background:
During the whole year, Schloss Dagstuhl invites scientists from all over the world to come to northern Saarland in the south west of Germany to debate the newest scientific findings in informatics. More than 3,500 computer scientists from universities, research institutions and industry take part in various scientific events at Dagstuhl each year. In addition, Schloss Dagstuhl operates dblp, a central publication database for computer science, and also offers open access publishing services. Since 2005, Schloss Dagstuhl is a member of the Leibniz Association, which connects 96 leading non-university research institutes and scientific infrastructure facilities all over Germany. Because of their national importance, the federal government and the state governments jointly fund the institutes of the Leibniz Association.
