Eurotech and Universities in Regensburg and Wuppertal sign cooperation agreement for QPACE2

Alexander Schlaak Referat II/2, Kommunikation
Universität Regensburg

Eurotech, a leading provider of embedded and supercomputing technologies, today announced to have signed with the University of Regensburg and the University of Wuppertal a research and development cooperation agreement to deliver a novel supercomputing architecture based on Intel Xeon Phi technology within the QPACE2 project.

In the project, funded by the D.F.G. (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – German Research Foundation), Eurotech R&D and the University of Regensburg will collaborate to complete the high level design of the architecture, while Eurotech engineering will take responsibility for the detailed design and manufacturing of the prototype, leaving some aspects of it (cooling subsystem, rack design, BMC firmware development) to Regensburg.

“We aim to deploy the first prototype of the QPACE2 machine by early 2014 ” – says Tilo Wettig of Regensburg University – “The QPACE2 system will be optimized to accelerate Lattice QCD simulations. Although the initial focus will be in LQCD, the use of standard commercial components will guarantee compatibility with a wider range of application areas” .

The goal of the project is to design, develop and manufacture a high performance architecture based on Intel Intel Xeon Phi, running the applications on them without the need of processors. The actual deliverable will be a 256 accelerators machine, with roughly 256 TFlop/s of peak performance.

“We are very satisfied to have signed this agreement” – says Giampietro Tecchiolli, Eurotech CTO – “Eurotech has always given a lot of attention to R&D cooperation with important European Universities as a way of creating and leveraging product development leadership in the HPC market. We are looking forward to collaborating with the University of Regensburg and Wuppertal with which we wish to consolidate the solid relationship we started during the first QPACE project few years ago”.

The QPACE2 supercomputer will use the Eurotech Aurora hot water cooling that will ensure high energy efficiency and optimize the operating conditions of the Intel coprocessors, bringing down the power consumption of the HPC system to an expected 75 kW peak power, with no need for air conditioning or chillers for cooling.

Streamlining the design to use only coprocessors promises to save capital costs for a set of applications, while the inherent efficiency of the Xeon Phi together with the Eurotech liquid cooling solution will give the performance needed, while keeping operating expenses at bay.

    About Eurotech:
Eurotech (ETH.MI) is a global company based in Italy and with subsidiaries in Europe, North America and Asia. The Eurotech Group develops and markets miniaturized computers for special uses (NanoPCs) and computers featuring high computing capacity (HPCs – High Performance Computers). With these two product categories Eurotech aims to become a leader in the implementation of the pervasive computing scenario which, by exploiting the Cloud IT infrastructure, is capable of enabling an entire range of value-added activities and services in the transport, logistics, security, industrial and medical sectors.
