World Health Summit 2013 opened with a wake-up call

Tobias Gerber Media & Communication
World Health Summit

Today, the fifth World Health Summit opened with a wake-up call by Aaron Ciechanover (Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry, 2004) during the central press conference: “It is immoral if somebody, anywhere in the world, dies of a disease we already have a cure for.” The question remains, how medical progress can reach all people worldwide.

One solution was offered immediately by José Ramos-Horta (Peace Noble Prize Laureate, 1996): “Education. Education. Education.” As about 40% of preventable deaths are due to individual behavior, as WHS President John Wong (National University of Singapore) explained, education can be a key to prevent a significant number of deaths.

The World Health Summit was opened by rousing speeches from Ambassador Jai S. Sohan (Singapore), Mario Czaja (Senator for Health, Senate of the City of Berlin), and Ernst Rietschel (CEO, Berlin Institute of Health), emphasizing the urgent need to work together: across sectors and across borders, as WHS Founding President Detlev Ganten (Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin) explained.

More approaches and possible solutions will be presented at the WHS Ceremony, starting today at 19:00 (GMT+1), by José Manuel Barroso (President of the European Commission), Guido Westerwelle (Foreign Minister, Germany), Daniel Bahr (Minister of Health, Germany), Günter Stock (President, Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities), and Christopher Viehbacher (CEO, Sanofi).

A live stream of the WHS Ceremony will be available at:
