Studying Youth in the Arab World and Germany. A conference by ZMO and GI Kairo

Dr. Sonja Hegasy Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO)
Geisteswissenschaftliche Zentren Berlin e.V. (GWZ)

Die Konferenz "Changing Values among Youth.

The Goethe-Institute Cairo and the Centre for Modern Oriental Studies in Berlin (ZMO) are organizing a two-day seminar in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation in Cairo in June 2005 on the issue of studying youth in Germany and the Arab World. So far, no Arab country disposes of a comprehensive youth study and thus little is known about the beliefs and attitudes of young adults under 35 years of age. Knowing more about this "silent majority", however, is crucial to the development of Arab societies and the productive use of their resources.
The two-day seminar organized in Cairo in June seeks to promote dialogue and exchange among youth study experts from Germany, Egypt and the Middle East as well as Egyptian government officials and youth representatives. Starting point for the discussion will be the German Shell Youth Study, a national survey which has been carried out in Germany in regular intervals for the past 50 years. Prof. Münchmeier who conducted the 13th Shell Youth Study in 2000 will give a critical account of its approach. German, Egyptian and Middle Eastern social scientists will then present recent findings from Egypt and other Arab countries to discuss theoretical and methodological lessons learned, considering both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Finally, a working group will formulate recommendations concerning themes, method and practical implications for studying youth in Egypt.
