August Wilhelm Iffland war von 1796 bis 1814 Direktor des Berliner Nationaltheaters. Zu dieser Zeit befand er sich als Schauspieler und Dramatiker auf dem Höhepunkt seines Ruhms. Gastspielreisen nach Breslau, Dresden, Hamburg, Weimar oder Wien machten ihn populär und zum ersten wirklichen Schauspielerstar Deutschlands. Goethe lud Iffland mehrfach nach Weimar ein, um ihn spielen zu sehen. Er sah in Iffland die Verkörperung der reinen, absoluten Schauspielkunst, der er Autonomie zugestand. Ifflands Familien-Stücke verglich
Goethe mit der niederländischen Genremalerei, in der sich „höchste Kunst verbirgt in milder Wahrheit“. Unter Ifflands Direktion fand am Berliner Nationaltheater eine Professionalisierung des Theaterbetriebs statt. Mit seinen Regeln für Schauspieler, seiner Kostümreform und seinem Repertoire machte er das Theater auf dem Gendarmenmarkt zur weithin ausstrahlenden Musterbühne.
