Die Gauß-Vorlesung mit dem Titel "The Mathematics of Holes" wird von Herrn Prof. Robert Ghrist gehalten. Sie ist in ein kulturelles Rahmenprogramm eingebettet, bei dem auch der von-Kaven-Preis der DFG verliehen wird.
Abstract der Gauß-Vorlesung: " Perhaps the most poetic expression of the beauty and power of Mathematics is revealed in the quantification and qualification of that which is not there: holes. Topology --- the mathematics of holes --- will be surveyed with a literary look at the many ways in which topology is used in data, networks, and sensing.
Der Vortragende, Prof. Robert Ghrist, ist der Andrea Mitchell Penn Integrating Knowledge Professor an der University of Pennsylvania. In seinen einflussreichen Arbeiten wendet er abstrakte mathematische Methoden auf aktuelle Fragestellungen und Probleme der Ingenieurwissenschaften an, speziell im Bereich der Robotik und Sensorennetzwerke. Sein Spezialgebiet ist die Topologie, ein Teilgebiet der Mathematik, das einen theoretischen Rahmen zur Visualisierung abstrakter Räume bereitstellt. Herr Ghrist wurde u.a. mit einem Presidential Early Career Award und dem Chauvenet Preis für herausragende mathematische Darstellung ausgezeichnet. Die Zeitung Scientific American hat ihn 2007 in die Liste der
50 "top scientific innovators" aufgenommen.
