The City of the Future and how to get there

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies cordially invite you to a podium discussion.

Over times, cities evolved from a self-sustaining entity to an agglomeration within a complex, constantly thickening web of economic, social and ecological connections to other agglomerations and hinterland. All over the world, labor, commodities, cultural forms, energy, raw materials and nutrients are all cycling within this web. The urban today represents an increasingly worldwide, if unevenly woven, fabric. This situation of planetary urbanization means that even infrastructures and sociospatial arrangements that lie well beyond the traditional city cores, suburban peripheries and metropolitan regions have become integral parts of a worldwide urban condition. How is the trend going to evolve in the future?

The discussion will take place on July 8, 2013 at 18:30 hours at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Jägerstraße 22/23, 10117 Berlin) with:

• Pierre Laconte (Foundation of the Urban Environment),
• Christian Gaebler (Permanent Secretary in the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment, Berlin),
• Florian Lennert (InnoZ, Berlin, LSE Cities, London)and
• Dagmar Haase (Geographical Institute/Humboldt University Berlin)

The discussion will be in English, moderated by Torsten Schäfer.
