„Ziel ist es, neue Entwicklungen in der Diabetes-Forschung und deren Auswirkungen auf das Sehorgan zu diskutieren und nach optimalen Behandlungsstrategien zu suchen“, sagt Lepoldina-Mitglied Prof. Dr. Rudolf F. Guthoff, Direktor der Universitätsaugenklinik Rostock, der das Symposium gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Peter Wiedemann (Universitätsaugenklinik Leipzig) organisiert.
Das Symposium findet unter anderem in Rostock statt, weil an der Universität Rostock ein Mikroskopiersystem entwickelt wurde, das Nervenschädigungen, wie sie durch die Zuckerkrankheit hervorgerufen werden, besonders früh entdecken und so hoffentlich bald einer gezielten Behandlung zuführen kann.
Am dem Symposium nimmt unter anderem der Direktor des National Eye Institutes NIH Bethesda, USA, Prof. Dr. Paul A. Sieving, teil, mit dem die Leipziger und Rostocker Kollegen seit Langem einen intensiven Gedankenaustausch pflegen.
