Bakterien und Pilze produzieren eine Fülle von Naturstoffen, von denen viele für den Menschen nützlich und hilfreich sind - etwa antibiotisch wirksame Substanzen, mit denen sich Mikroorganismen gegen ihre Konkurrenten im Boden wehren. Bisher ist erst ein Bruchteil dieser Stoffe erforscht; unter anderem aus deshalb, weil sich viele Boden-Organismen nicht in Kultur züchten lassen.
