Young Researchers worried about digital Europe:

Dipl.-Ing. Sibylle Wirth Presse und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit

    Europe needs more start-ups
EU-funded networking platform popular with students and ICT researchers

Karlsruhe, December 18, 2014. The inaugural event, which will take place from the 20th to the 22nd of February at the Lufthansa Training and Conference Centre in Frankfurt, was greeted with such great interest that even the initiators were surprised. Europe is concerned that it in competition with American and Asian ICT corporations it will become irrevocably dependent - and so has for some time been developing corresponding countermeasures. One of these is called the ICT2B (Information and Communication Technologies to Business), which is funded by the EU DG Connect in the amount of five hundred thousand euros. This money will support measures that bring together talented young researchers with entrepreneurial talent from all over Europe.

The announcement of the first meeting was greeted with immense interest by students and researchers from across Europe. Three weeks later, the "Innovation Runway Event" was fully booked. A total of 100 researchers and business and computer science students from 14 countries will meet at this three-day convention. During the event in Frankfurt team building will be paramount, and the EU sees, as a medium-term target, the development of viable business concepts and business ideas for information and communication technology, which will lead Europe to its own digital identity and sovereignty.

The project is managed under the auspices of the Fraunhofer IOSB in Karlsruhe. Jointly with the SEERC in Greece and the Universities of Sheffield (UK), Twente (NL) and the Technion in Israel High Potential Individuals were invited to Frankfurt in order to, according to the director of SEERC, Nikos Zaharis, "free their creativity and form project teams ". Zaharis continues: "In particular we invited unconventional minds who are able to think laterally and who do not want to follow predetermined career paths."

While the first event initially supports team building, there will be a second meeting where project ideas will be presented and evaluated by a panel of industry, science and EU representatives. Behind the idea of ICT2B is also the desire to build bridges between the individual faculties. While business models are developed quickly from excellent research in America, young scientists in Europe usually know very little about marketing technologies and research ideas. Economists, on the other hand, have little insight into ICT research. But project coordinator Brink of Fraunhofer remains optimistic about the question of Europe's situation in the global ICT race: "Europe's chances in competing digital markets are based in its diversity, openness and willingness to change. These are the values with which we approach ICT2B and with which we will develop, with determination, in the ICT industry. "

The organisers of the Frankfurt Kick Off meeting are convinced that staging this event will not only send a positive signal, but will also pave the way for a promising, digital Europe of the future.
