Leuphana Premiere: Corporate MOOC with Deutsche Telekom

    Lüneburg. The Digital School at Leuphana University of Lüneburg has expanded its curriculum. On behalf of Deutsche Telekom, it has conceptualized, for the first time, a massive open online course for a company and implemented it successfully.

    Numerous experts within the company and across international universities have shown their support for the project.
    The course was focused on strengthening the entrepreneurial spirit, innovative energies and cooperation between virtual teams at Telekom. Participants were not only taught basic knowledge to that end, but also engaged in the practical work of developing innovative product ideas for telecommunications businesses in an information and knowledge-driven society.

    Birgit Klesper, Senior Vice President for Group Transformational Change & Corporate Responsibility at Telekom, gave a positive assessment: “The enthusiastic response from participants, the impressive output of the virtual teams, who were spread across different countries, and the fact that 72 percent of participants remained actively engaged with the course right up to the end, shows that MOOCs can be an intelligent supplement in the field of corporate learning as well.”

    We were entering unknown territory both in terms of the didactic responsibilities and the instruction of a corporate MOOC, said Holm Keller, the full-time Vice President of Leuphana. He also saw the experience in positive terms: “in order to make this MOOC succeed, the assignment required us, above all, to take into consideration the special needs of working professionals with varying levels of experience.” Leuphana’s idea of a “Mentored Open Online Course” has shown itself to be effective in a corporate context as well, Keller said.

    Leuphana’s approach entails providing intensive advising for the course participants, which clearly distinguishes it from other Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The organizers therefore spoke about their own program as a Mentored Open Online Course.  This model was tried out successfully for the first time last year.  As many as 2,800 participants from over 100 countries had registered for the course, “Ideal City of the 21st Century”, under the direction of Prof. Daniel Libeskind.  They worked as teams on their vision of the ideal city. 

    Leuphana is currently offering another on-line course, entitled “Psychology of Negotiations”, in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation.
