ESMT Annual Forum 2013 - The Future of Jobs

The ESMT Annual Forum 2013 “The Future of Jobs” will address the various issues of individual employment, corporate career development, and European competitiveness and job growth in a volatile economic environment.

During this one-day conference, participants will examine the impact of migration on the jobs of the future, the demands of a diverse workforce, the lack of competitiveness in a number of European countries, and the role entrepreneurship plays in shaping people’s careers. Conference members will explore the competitive environment of high performers, define the roles of future leaders, and examine the way these changes will influence executive development in the future.
Keynotes, panels, videos, and interactive mini-cases will engage participants in critical discussions on the complex realities of current and future expectations, relationships, cultural norms, and conflicts, for which they will be asked to generate new concepts and ideas.

Furthermore, the ESMT Responsible Leadership Award will honor an outstanding member of the global business community.

11:45 – 1:00 p.m. Panel: The impact of migration on jobs of the future

Recent estimates suggest that there are 214 million international migrants worldwide, making migration one of the hottest topics in contemporary history. How are companies and their workforces impacted by such migration and mobility and what does the future hold? What are the hurdles that responsible leaders face in successfully integrating migrants into their corporate identities and cultures? Bringing together representatives of academia, industry, and international organizations such as the UN, this panel will challenge our thinking about the role migration plays in attracting and retaining talent. It will touch upon the challenges and opportunities that current migration patterns and policies create for global companies. The panel will also deal with the question of re-sponsibility that companies, regulators, and civil society have toward immigrants. Finally, the panel will discuss the socio-economic impact that the demographics and skill levels of migrants have on both the destination coun¬try and their country of origin.

1) Interactive session: How to bounce back from a career disaster - and avoid slipping into one

This session will focus on how to avoid being blindsided politically in a new job. Using insights from the study of social networks, it will concentrate on strategies that protect high performers from being undermined by rivals in the workplace. Using a brief video and interactive mini-cases, this session will ask participants to consider how they would help a colleague rebound from a career disaster. It will challenge the conference members to think through the steps that someone who has been sidelined and desires to “get back in the game” should take.

2) Panel: The future of leadership development

This session will explore the question of what is going to change in the way organizations approach leadership development, given the changing natures of the way people work, learn, and build their careers. Bringing together representatives of academia, the executive search industry, the nascent CEO mentoring field, and high-impact organizations, this panel will challenge common thinking about the nature of leaders and followers in current and future organizations, and the ways we select and groom future leaders. It will raise the questions organiza¬tions must ask in order to help leaders fit the requirements of the jobs of the future.

3) Panel: Spurring entrepreneurship in organizations

Berlin is situated in one of Europe’s most vibrant entrepreneurial hotbeds – at least according to many recent articles in the popular press. This session will explore the role that entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial skills play in shaping people’s career paths within and across organizations. It will bring together entrepreneurs, academics, and corporate leaders to tackle how different organizational set-ups such as incubators, office arrange¬ments, and virtual organizations can stimulate or potentially stifle entrepreneurship. This is important not only for founders of new ventures but also, and perhaps even more so, for corporations that wish to unleash the entrepreneurial power of their employees.

4:00 – 5:15 p.m. Panel: How to retrieve growth and jobs in Europe?

While the overall economic outlook in Europe and the stability of the Euro do not look as grim as they did up until last summer, major reforms are still needed to address the considerable challenges posed by high sovereign and private debt levels. Another difficult issue is the lack of competitiveness and growth in a number of European countries. Reforms are desperately needed in light of these countries’ record-high unemployment levels, which threaten in particular the future of the younger generation. Therefore, the question of how Europe can return to a dynamic and sustainable growth pattern and create new jobs has to be answered soon. Panelists will discuss what has been done so far, which actions still need to be taken, and how these measures should be implemented. In addition, participants will focus on the responsibilities of the stakeholders involved, namely governments, companies, and employees.
